The
Lord's day
When God rested on the seventh day, this was not because He was tired. The
rest of God on the seventh day is symbolic of the fact that God found
complacency, a rest of soul, in His creation. In the faith of the Gospel we
can enter into this rest of God, as we rest in Christ and redemption by his
blood.
Paul, in the epistle to the Hebrews, couples entering into the faith of the
Gospel with the true spiritual meaning of the Sabbath, as we can read in
Hebrews 4:1-10.
To the christian, every day of the week belongs to Christ. The observance of
the New Testament Lord's day, Sunday, stands in apostolic example. We are not
only under apostolic doctrine but also under apostolic example, when those
examples are consistent with apostolic doctrine. If we are legalistic in this,
it is evident that we are not really observing the Lord's day.
Providences some times might prevent our attendance on public worship, but
providences should never prevent us from being specially midful of Him, who
died and rose for us on Sunday morning.
