The
love of God
Many mistakenly think that the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ was to
enable God to love us. The scripture plainly teach just the opposite. The
sacrifice of Christ was because God did love us! "God
commendeth His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died
for us" (Rom. 5: 8). "God so loved the world
that He gave His only begotten Son" (John 3: 16). Christ's
death was the effect of God's love for siners, not the cause.
Hear an old writer on the subject of God's love: "It is self-evident
truth that, as God only knows, so He only can reveal His love. It is a hidden
love, veiled deep within the recesses of His very essence, for God
is Love, not merely loving and lovely; but love itself, essential
love. Who, then, can reveal it but Himself?"
Behold God's love! See how He has inscribed this glorious perfection of His
nature in letters of blood drawn from the heart of Jesus. His love was so
great that nothing short of the death of His beloved Son could give an
adequate expression of its immensity.
